Myanmar inspired wedding dress

Such an exciting wedding dress to make, as Nuam is from Myanmar and wanted to incorporate the traditional elements of the national costume the “longyi” but also have a traditional “western” wedding outfit.

I absolutely love the final look of it. She suits it so well.

So we made the “longyi” skirt which is like a wrap-around skirt. We made it in the heavy Mikado fabric. We also made a boned bodice in the same fabric, to go over the top. Then we spent quite a bit of time choosing the embellishments. Nuam went for lovely guipure lace motifs down the overlay of the skirt and along the hemline of the skirt. I really love how they sit proud on the shiny textured Mikado skirt.

Nuam then chose a lovely embroidered tulle for a little cover-up. It almost looks like a cobweb and it has a silver thread going through it too. It’s so delicate and sits beautifully on Nuam’s skin and over the boned bodice.

Nuam’s dear friend came along for the fittings. It is so sweet, the friend’s mother hand made the veil for Nuam to wear and it travelled carefully all the way from the US for the fittings. And then we added a few lace motifs to the hemline.

I am so proud of how it all came together and how lovely Nuam look like a mix of the 2 cultures which is really what she is in the best possible way, and a truly Myanmar inspired wedding.

It has been lovely working with Nuam, and I have so much admiration for her for teaching and working on PhD as well as planning a wedding in a pandemic. The thought nearly takes my breath away.

Tha

nks so much to Berni Palumbo for letting us use the lovely photos.

Nuam writes:

I asked Mette and her team to create a custom wedding outfit for me that combined the traditional wear of my home country with the Western style of wedding dress and she did such a wonderful job! It was the perfect coming together of the two cultures I’m part of that I had been envisioning in my head and I was blown away by how perfectly she had captured the concept. The quality of her work is incredibly high as well as very reasonably priced. Mette was wonderful to work with as well – she had endless patience as I worked out exactly what I wanted, and gave helpful and honest guidance throughout the whole process.

Highly recommended!
