The Freja team loves to design for our Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom Clients. We serve many people in Edinburgh, the rest of the UK and some from abroad.

Finding the perfect outfit that suits the occasion can be tricky, so we offer the same personalised design process for brides’ and grooms’ mothers. Creating pieces that flatter your shape as well as being appropriate for your age and style, helping you to relax and enjoy the day. We understand that not everyone has the same style, and we ensure that your style is fully represented throughout the design.

It is essential to take a little time to get to know you and learn about the wedding itself. Determining if there is a particular colour you enjoy wearing. Or a colour that will flatter the overall theme. Maybe complement your daughter/son’s wedding dress or kilt/suit. Perhaps taking the colours of the bridesmaids’ dresses into consideration. When dressing for the seasons, we will recommend the best summer or winter outfits and fabrics.

Offering a service that fits your busy schedule, so approximately four meetings/fittings before the wedding day will be enough time for us to create the perfect outfit. An outfit we know you will feel comfortable wearing and be happy being photographed in.

What is the process to get a Mother of the Bride dress made?

First, we will arrange a meeting. This could be on a video call or in person. At this meeting, we will discuss silhouettes and styles. We can explore materials, the main fabric, linings, embellishments, any lace or anything else we would like to use. You will get to see a sketch of your design and make changes to it before the final proposal.

Then, we will write you a proposal. Including the price, and potentially alternative options for pricing and details, depending on what was discussed in your consultation.

Finally, we will ask you to agree to our Terms & Conditions. We take a deposit, measure you up and start creating.

Starting the dressmaking process by creating a calico model of the dress. Created in plain fabric that allows us to adjust/add, and take away as much as possible. We do this to avoid heavily manipulating your beautiful final fabric. You are invited in to try it on, and once you are happy with this, we can begin to work on the actual dress.

Once we have converted all the adaptations from the template. We will cut your “real dress”. At this stage, there will not be any fastenings or hem or anything like that. However, we will fit it to you and can adjust it at this stage.

Finally, we will invite you back when we have finished your dress. With the added fastening and any embellishments or details.

Which accessories will work with my mother-of-the-bride dress?

We have lots of experience in helping you pick the right accessories for your garment. If you wish to base your garment around colours in jackets/shoes/bags/jewellery that you already have, we can help. Working closely with a range of brilliant industry professionals, who create accessories such as beautiful headpieces and hats, allows us to provide matching fabric for your perfect accessory.

What if I lose or gain weight while having my mother-of-the-bride dress made?

If you are looking to change your size, please let us know as soon as you can. We will support you in your decision, and we can work around weight loss or gain. Telling us in advance means we can plan production and fittings around your goals. However, we will have to know in advance so we can make a plan. Please do not leave it until the last minute if you would like our help with this. As this service requires planning and booking in advance, to ensure we can get all fittings done as close to the desired date as possible.

 

What do I wear under my dress? Which underwear should I pick?

Advising you on the best underwear or shapewear to look and feel your best on the day is all part of the process. A lot of dresses require a specific type of underwear depending on the style, and we can’t always build in the necessary support to eliminate wearing a bra. In your fittings, we will go through all this with you so you know exactly what to wear! A while ago, we wrote a blog post all about ‘foundation garments’ that we recommend under your outfits. Do I need an appointment for my consultation and fittings? Will you take walk-ins?

Ideally, we would like to ask you to book an appointment in advance. We will then have set time aside to spend with you, and we’ll have done any preparations in advance to make the process as smooth as possible. Most of the time, if you show up without we will be in the middle of a fitting or consultation already. Our days tend to be booked with back-to-back appointments or fittings, and any quiet time is blocked out to prepare for these appointments or for creating your garment.

How much does it cost to make a mother of the bride dress?

All our pieces are made individually and, therefore, individually priced. We will always quote you a price and stick to it before we start. The only changes to that are if there are changes to the initial agreed specification.

The things that have an impact on the price are: the cost of the fabric and the difficulty of the design. Also, the amount of hand-worked details. This is anything attached or matched up by hand, like beading, buttons and loops, matching up of lace scallops and lace designs. We pride ourselves and our business on ensuring that our pricing is fair to the garment, which is why we don’t do a blanket price for each style (long, short, two-piece).
