This is a story with a very happy ending.

Wow! Where do I start with the service that Mette provided for my wedding day jumpsuit?! From the initial website enquiry, I knew that Mette was going to make me feel comfortable and heard. The first visit to her shop in Edinburgh really spoke to me, I described what I was after and she sketched my exact vision. Before I knew it, the jumpsuit was made up in the materials we’d chosen and I was completely in love! Thank you for providing me an epic wedding outfit. Mette’s service is out of this world – thank you for everything 🙌🏻.

“Mette and her team created a bespoke red wedding dress based on my specific vision. From day one, it was a pleasure to work with Mette – she was not only super excited and supportive of a non-traditional wedding dress but brought her expertise to my ideas to create an outstanding design. During fittings, she was very engaged and easily interpreted what I felt worked, what didn’t and how to fix things. This gave me great confidence that Mette understood my vision and my shape. I work overseas, so opportunities for looking at fabric samples and doing fittings were tight (I am also very thorough in my deliberations..!), but Mette was incredibly patient with me. From waiting for fabric deliveries to reach me on another continent to very last-minute alterations, Mette created an environment that allowed me to be honest and explore options – a quality which is arguably even more valuable than her excellent couture skills. The best example of this is after I lost some weight and had been slow to realise one element of the fit which didn’t work for me: I ended up requesting an alteration in a 24-hour window between my and Mette’s respective travels 4 days before the wedding. She accommodated these expertly and positively, which took a huge weight off my mind, freeing me to get excited for the day and feel great about my dress. Communication with Mette was excellent throughout, and the dress is beautifully crafted, with lots of thoughtful details to make it practical as well. I am in love with my final product. I cannot recommend Mette and her wonderful team enough.

Mette made my wedding dress, and it was beautiful. I really enjoyed the whole process from the initial meeting to the final fitting. Mette listened carefully to what I wanted the dress to look like and made the perfect dress. Mette was very professional and everything went like clockwork – I cannot recommend Mette and Freja Designer Dressmaking highly enough. Thank you Mette!

 Wedding dress FAQs

What style of wedding dress suits me?

Not every bride feels as though they fit within the traditional bridal look. Whether that’s because they don’t want the classic white dress, or even a dress at all. Our mission has always been to cater to every individual and their own unique style.

You don’t have to deviate from your comfort zone for your wedding day. Some women come to us feeling completely unsupported in other bridal boutiques where their individuality was not catered for. It can also be difficult to visualise your outfit when your style or shape isn’t represented. There is a misconception that a bride is a certain age or look. Not everyone gets married in their twenties or thirties. We work with brides of all ages to ensure they feel their best on their big day in an outfit that feels like them.

We work through a personalised process with each bride. Starting with a relaxed first meeting to talk through your perfect outfit. We don’t just have to create a bespoke wedding dress; there are so many options for you. Whether you want a classic long white gown or an emerald jumpsuit, a tartan two-piece suit or a skirt and corset top combination, we’ve got you covered. Your outfit will start from scratch so all your ideas can be incorporated. We will talk through silhouettes, colours, fabrics and everything else in between.

I don’t know what suits me, can you help?

We appreciate that not everyone has a vision when they first step through our doors.

If you feel comfortable trying on physical dresses, this can be a great start. You may find you love elements from different dresses, even if each one isn’t the right choice for you. If there’s a dress or jumpsuit that you have and love the fit of, please bring it. Or bring a photo of you wearing it. All of this will help us create a beautiful outfit in which you feel happy and confident. We will send you a proposal of all the design elements we have talked about and the sketch we created together.

Once we have a design agreed, we can move on to even more exciting parts. Fittings! We start with a calico mock-up, which uses a plain fabric to replicate your garment. This allows you to visualise and make changes without overly manipulating your final fabric. This stage also allows you to get a feel for how the outfit will look on you.

When you are happy with the calico, we make your actual wedding day garment. You will usually have a few calico fittings to get it right, then a couple of fabric fittings of your actual dress, with small adjustments being made.

Can you replicate a design I’ve seen elsewhere for my wedding dress?

Sometimes your dream dress on social media can be out of your budget and you would like to have a copy made.

Unfortunately, copying designs is illegal. However, as dressmakers, we can incorporate ideas from multiple dresses to create your perfect gown, which you’ll never see on anyone else’s Instagram!

Send us your ideas and we can discuss how to bring in your preferences but craft something unique for your special day.

I would love my outfit to be less traditional

Requests like this are a favourite.

We make a lot of jumpsuits, trouser suits, and alternative wedding dresses. Working in colours is another favourite of ours. We can make your dream dress in black, green, red, or any colour you fancy.

We definitely do not just stick to ivory colours and would love to help with your exact colour.

I would love to wear my mum’s dress, but it needs to be changed. Can you help?

We love this request.

We have reworked a lot of different wedding dresses inherited from loved ones. Some of them were just slight alterations, but mostly we have done complete remakes.

It is a great way to cherish your family, and often you suit the same cut or style as your mum or auntie, it just needs to get slightly updated, and we love doing this kind of work.

What if I want to change something in the design?

This is what the calico fitting is for. Speak up in all your appointments and tell us when something’s not as you imagined. The sooner we know, the sooner we can rectify it for you. It is YOUR dress; we are just bringing it to life. This whole bespoke process involves lots of communication to ensure you are happy. We will always give our opinions (when asked or to advise), but ultimately, it’s your design.

Can you accommodate changing weight when designing my wedding dress?

A lot of brides come to us with goals for their wedding day, whether it is to lose weight or gain it, just tone up or have a dramatic change. It is important to us that you book in advance for this, as it takes a lot of planning on our end to accommodate fittings close to the deadline. The same applies to pregnancy; we are happy to accommodate growing bumps that may feature on the big day. Bespoke designing allows you a lot more freedom when it comes to sizing, in particular. This is definitely the route to go down if you have a changing weight goal, as you aren’t committing to ordering a size like you would in a traditional boutique.

How does this work? We do your initial consultation as normal, picking style, silhouette, fabrics etc. Depending on how drastic a change you are making determines how long we wait to start the garment creation. We always prepare and do the consultation in advance so we can order fabrics and ensure we have everything ready for the process. Then, we do the calico fitting so you can see the vision. We aim to do all the main important fittings as close together as possible, as near as possible to the deadline. This allows it to be as true to size without large adjustments to the final fabric.

How much does a bespoke wedding dress cost?

All our wedding gowns are made individually and, therefore, individually priced. You’ll receive a fixed quote before we begin—only adjusted if you change the design. Unlike bridal shops, our pricing covers the complete finished dress, with no hidden alteration costs.

Wedding dresses start at:

  • £1600 for man-made fibres
  • £2200 for silk

The things that have an impact on the price are: the cost of the fabric, the difficulty of the design and the amount of hand-worked details. This is anything attached or matched up by hand, like beading, buttons and loops, matching up of lace scallops and lace designs. We pride ourselves on ensuring that our pricing is fair to the garment. Via the form, you can get in touch for a more accurate quote for what exactly you are looking for.

Do I need an appointment for my consultation and fittings? Do you take walk-ins?

We ask you to book an appointment in advance. We will then have set time aside to spend with you, and we will have done any preparations in advance to make the process as smooth as possible. Most of the time, if you show up without, we will be in the middle of a fitting or consultation already. Our days tend to be booked with back-to-back appointments or fittings, and any quiet time is blocked out to prepare for these appointments or to create your garment.

We are by appointment only to ensure that we have plenty of time to explore your ideas. Ensuring that you are the priority in your appointment, we ask kindly that you don’t come too early or run late to your appointment, so you aren’t eating into anyone else’s booked time. We would love to meet you and explore your ideas. Whether that’s through a video call or meeting in person, please get in touch with us to start the process. You can book here for a video call or here for an in-person appointment.
